The USDA came to WebFirst with a need to re-architect and re-develop the usda.gov website in Drupal 8. Our team of Information Architects, content migration specialists, Drupal developers and project managers took on the challenge with a primary focus on user experience and usability – The collaborative effort used the best of both government and industry expertise and developed a high performing new website.
Given the various security, reliability, and accessibility requirements of the Agency, combined with a tight deadline, it was critical that the WebFirst team worked closely with the USDA communications team. Developing the site in the latest version of Drupal (Drupal 8) framework also presented several technical challenges since many Drupal contributed modules were still in alpha or beta release states.
WebFirst, together with the USDA, created a framework for an Enterprise-wide platform that allows all USDA websites to be shared and grow together by enabling content to be managed in a way that breaks down internal silos and optimizes collaboration. Moreover, we followed the draft US Federal Design Standards in the design architecture of the website. The result was an easy-to-use site for both content managers and public users using the Drupal Web Content Management System.
