The NIH Library is an open stacks biomedical research library, whose collection and services are developed to support the programs of the National Institutes of Health and selected U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agencies. The NIH Library provides access to over 10,000 electronic journals, 16,000 e-books, and over 170 databases. The NIH Library came to WebFirst with a need to re-design and re-develop the website and to make it accessible via mobile responsive design.
WebFirst worked closely with the NIH Library staff under a short time frame to accomplish their goals of launching the new site. More specifically, the new site must be usable, modern in its design aesthetic and fully functionality to meet the training needs of the Library.
WebFirst, in conjunction with the library, created a new site which includes functionality such as a training module (for inhouse and webinars), security via integration with Internal Proxy Servers, improvements to the search engine, ERM data, re-theming and a design refresh. WebFirst’s team of designers, themers and Drupal developers worked closely with the NIH Library staff in the development of the new site. WebFirst has helped to create a robust knowledge management system that includes innovative search engine technology, taxonomy using a cost-effective, open source platform (Drupal) as a foundation. Technologies utilized: Drupal 7, apache Solr, user-centered design, information architecture, custom Drupal module development (PHP).
